Mustangs Maul Mauraders 37-8

Mauraders

The (4-0) Madison Mustangs traveled to Carroll University this past Saturday to take on the (3-2) Milwaukee Mauraders. The Mauraders coming off an impressive 26-0 win over the winless Monarchs looked to continue their winning streak behind QB Shannon King and HB Mike Hill. The Mustangs have been on a streak of their own, starting off the 2009 season 4-0 and having won their last 16 straight!

The Mustangs D started the game with a three-and-out, and with a strong punt return by Zak "Flash" Gordon, the Mustangs offense took over in Muaraders territory but couldn’t cash in and settled for a 36 yard FG by kicker Jason Epps to take a 3-0 lead. The Mauraders offense then held on to the ball for over 10 minutes and after a Mauraders TD was called back because of a penalty the Mustangs D forced them to punt again. The Mustangs ended the first quarter by fumbling the ball back to the Mauraders. The Mustangs D held again lead by LB Ryan Mayer and DE James Kamoku. The second quarter the Mustangs O finally hit pay dirt with a 58 yard run by HB Kyle Brodd, which set up a 3 yard run by QB David "Petro" Pietrowiak, making the score 10-0. However, the Mauraders countered with a 47 kickoff return of their own setting up their offense in Mustangs territory. On 3rd and goal from the Stangs 16, QB Shannon King weaved his way through the Mustangs D and into the end zone. Following a 2 point conversion by FB Kevin Rattler, the Mauraders closed the gap to 10-8. But that’s as close as they would get. The Mustangs D shut down the Mauraders O and the Mustangs O took to the air and ended the half with 2 straight TD connections from Petro to Gordon of 27 & 20 yards, and a 24-8 halftime lead.

The second half started the same as the first ended with a steady drive down the Mauraders field with key receptions from WR Mike Darden and Reggie Davis. The first drive of the second half ended with a 16 yard screen pass from Petro to Brodd, 31-8. The Mustangs D then shinned turning the Mauraders O over 2 times with an INT by CB Jesse Morton and a fumble recovery by LB Brandon Wanless. The Mustangs ended the 3rd quarter with another TD pass from Petro, his 4th of the game, 20 yards to WR Reggie Davis, 37-8. The fourth quarter was played quick and stout by both teams, with the 2 lone bright spots being another INT of QB King by LB Aaron Gobel, and a 44 yard pass connection between QB Chris Davis and Gordon.

At the end of the night the Mustangs D forced 3 turnovers, sacked Mauraders QB’s 6 times, lead by Kamoku’s (3), and held the Mauraders to just 153 yards of total offense. The Mustangs O totaled 352 yard, on just 43 offensive plays, and was lead by Petro’s 5 TD’s, Zak Gordon, 4 receptions for 97 yards 2 TD’s, and HB Kyle Brodd, 103 total yards and a TD. This week the Mustangs (5-0) start a 4 game home stand against conference foe Fond du Lac Crusaders (2-3).
