Crusaders

The Madison Mustangs had their first breakout game of the season putting up 56 of their 66 points in the first half and shutting out the Fond du Lac Crusaders.

The Mustangs D kicked off the scoring with 3 TD’s before the offense even stepped on the field! On the second play of the game SS Mark Mashburn scooped a Fondy fumble and scored from 22 yards out, 7-0. After just one more Fondy offensive play LB Ryan Mayer picked off QB Tim Gudex and returned it 20 yards for the Mustangs second score, 14-0. The very next offensive play, SS Mark Mashburn sniffed out a screen pass, intercepted it and returned it 31 yards for his second and the defenses 3rd TD, 21-0. In the next possession, the Mustangs D held the Crusaders to a 3-and-out and after a 31 yard punt return by Zak Gordon, the Mustangs offense took the field for the first time in Crusaders territory. After marching right down the field the Mustangs capped their first drive with a 17 yard TD pass from QB David Pietrowiak to WR Reggie Davis, 28-0. HB George Randolph ended the 1st quarter scoring with a 9 yard TD run giving the Mustangs a 35-0 lead.

In the 2nd quarter the Mustangs D held strong, not allowing an inch to the Crusaders. HB Kyle Brodd starting the scoring with a 2 yard TD plunge, 42-0. After another 3-and-out by the Mustangs D, PR Zak Gordon returned a punt 41 yards setting up a 5 yard TD pass to WR Mike Gilbertson from “Petro”, 49-0. The 2nd quarter ended with DT Jacob Ripp and DE James Kamoku tackling and stripping Fony HB Erik Rosholt, giving the Mustangs O great field position. On the very first play HB Kyle Brodd took a option pitch 30 yards to pay dirt to end the first half scoring 56-0.

There was little scoring in the second half with many of both teams reserves getting playing time. However, the Mustangs did manage to kick a 22 yard FG, by K Jason Epps, in the 3rd quarter, and HB Russ Beier had 62 yards on 7 carries and a score to bring the final tally to 66-0. The Mustangs D forced 4 turnovers, scored 3 TD’s, and held the Crusaders offense to 4 first downs and 44 total yards. The Mustangs O racked up 363 yards, 233 on the ground, of total offense and had their largest scoring output of the 2009 season. This week, July 25th, in a rematch of the 2008 NFC Championship game, the Mustangs (6-0) take on the Milwaukee Venom (4-2) in Middleton, WI.
