Mustangs Start Slow, Finish Hot to Toast Panthers
Perhaps the bye week was NOT what the doctor ordered.
Coming off a period of rest, the Mustangs started Saturday's contest with the Greendale Panthers quite sluggishly. Madison did not appear to have the urgency they've shown in other games during the first quarter, but like all good teams do, the Mustangs were able to find the switch and flip it en route to a dominating win.
The Hit Squad held their own on the defensive side of the ball, forcing the Panthers into turnover after turnover, and giving the offense multiple chances to shake its early game funk. Midway through the first quarter, QB David Pietrowiak found RB Kyle Brodd streaking down the right sidelines for the game's first score. Following another dominant possession by the D, the offense was able to once again punch the ball across the goalline with a strike from Petro to WR Zak Gordon.
Despite allowing their first blocked punt in over three years (which was covered for a safety), the Mustangs went in to the half up 23-2. Resting most of the starters for the second half, the offense continued to move the ball under the guidance of QB Dave Hebgen in the third quarter, including one very long, sustained drive which only ended after a snap sailed over Hebgen's head.
The Hit Squad continued to pour on the pain throughout the entire second half. Madison crossed the goalline one final time in the fourth quarter after RB Russ Beier hauled in a pass and ducked into the endzone. The win takes the Mustangs to 5-0 on the season, and extends their winning streak to 29 games, dating back to 2008.
Madison returns home following a bye week over the holiday. They will face the Milwaukee Storm (0-5) at Breitenbach Stadium on Saturday July 10th. The night will also be Family Night with the Mustangs, with kid friendly events and fun beginning at 5PM. Kick off will be 7PM.
